A 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in her house in Chamarajpet on Monday evening after her mother scolded her for not completing her homework and wasting time watching TV.

The deceased, S Bhavya, was a student of class IX in a private school in Azadnagar. At 5.30 pm on Monday, her mother chided her for neglecting studies and wasting time, the police said.

Her mother then left for temple and returned after 7.30 pm. There was no response when she knocked on the door. When the door was broken open with the help of neighbours, she saw the charred body of Bhavya.

The police said preliminary investigation suggested that Bhavya set herself ablaze after pouring kerosene on her. The neighbours did not see smoke from the house and thus were unaware of the incident until her mother returned home.

Bhavya’s father, Shivakumar, and sister work with a private company and were not at home. The body was shifted to Victoria Hospital mortuary. Chamarajpet police have registered a case.
