Kannada Development Authority (KDA) chief Mukhyamantri Chandru has decried politics over special status for northern Karnataka. He slammed the ruling BJP government as well as the opposition Congress for politicking over the issue.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, he said as the chairman of KDA he wanted the bill to amend article 371J of the Constitution to be passed during the current parliamentary session itself. “It is not correct on part of anyone including the BJP to prove to be a roadblock for the bill,” he said.
“The Vidharbha and Telangana models of having a special status have their own drawbacks. The Congress says for Hyderabad-Karnataka region a special model has been designed which is a mixture of both. However, they should give consideration for the state government as ours is a federal system,” Chandru said.

However, the ruling BJP also should work in coordination with the Congress to see to it that the passage of the bill is not delayed. Chandru said as of now he does not know much about the developments regarding the issue.

He announced that he will lead a delegation to Delhi to press for a comprehensive water policy, language policy and education policy. His delegation would comprise 21 members including writers G R Channabasappa, Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Dr Vamanacharya, Hampa Nagaraj and Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Pundalika The delegation will reach New Delhi on December 9 and stay there till December 15. Education in the mother tongue should be made compulsory from standard one to five all over the country, Chandru demanded.

Commercialisation of education had forced the parents to seek admissions only to private English medium schools. This trend is dangerous to all local languages, he explained.
The Centre needs to develop a water policy as upper riparian states in the country are exploited.

This leads to disharmony. As for as language policy is concerned, knowledge of local language should be made compulsory when it comes to employment, Chandru stated.
Why December 9

Chandru’s decision to take the delegation to New Delhi on December 9 raised questions that its a tactic to avoid Yedyurappa’s convention which is scheduled on the same day. When asked on the schedule, he stated that the tour was planned one month ago.

Chief minister Jagadish Shettar Shettar is leaving for New Delhi on Tuesday to meet all MPs of the state over the issue. The move of Shettar comes in the backdrop of Congress slamming the ruling BJP for proving to be a roadblock for implementing special status bill for Hyderabad Karnataka region by raising objections. Sources add that BJP wants to make its stand loud and clear about the issue.
