Aspirants for undergraduate engineering seats in colleges in the state for academic year 2010-11 need no longer worry about not getting into top colleges that were left out of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) list.

The AICTE on Tuesday resolved the issue with a single letter that permitted the state government to conduct the counselling as per the 2009 seat matrix given by the council.

The 2009 seat matrix includes the top colleges including People’s Education Society Institute of Technology (PESIT), MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT), BMS College of Engineering, and RV College of Engineering (RVCE), which had been left out in the AICTE matrix this year.

The AICTE letter stated that the counselling process could proceed using the 2009 seat matrix if it failed to come up with a new matrix for this academic year before July 14.

Sources in the state higher education department confirmed that they had received the AICTE letter granting the permission on Tuesday evening.

“We received the letter from AICTE and they have permitted us to re-start counselling if we don’t get fresh matrix for this academic year which currently has lots of confusion,” said an official from then department.

However, this does not mean that the counselling would be preponed to its earlier schedule of July 7. The postponement itself was because of the top engineering colleges not appearing on the AICTE’s seat matrix for 2010-11.

On Monday (July 5), the state higher education minister Aravind Limbavali announced that the counselling will begin from July 14, if everything is cleared from AICTE.

At the same time Limbavali mentioned that they wrote a letter to AICTE asking permission to conduct counselling with previous year’s matrix.

Responding to that letter, AICTE sent its reply on Tuesday. “Whether we get the matrix from AICTE or not we will start counselling from July 14. We will inform the candidates via SMS and we will issue a notification,” said an official from Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA).

The AICTE’s letter now resolves the problem faced by KEA of shortage of seats. There were 167 engineering colleges offering 36,524 government seats as per 2009.

However, this year, 148 colleges got AICTE approval and the government was left with only 30,512 seats —a shortage of 6,012 seats.

The shortage apart, the main concern of the students was that of not getting seats in top colleges of the state, seven of which had not appeared on the AICTE’s list this year.

The problem has been attributed to a technical glitch which failed to update the approval status of these colleges in the final data drawn up by the council as the entire process was online to ensure transparency.

AICTE officials on Monday had told DNA that the problem would be resolved soon. The officials are still in the midst of resolving the problem to come up with the entire matrix for this year.
