Rain may play spoilsport on New Year’s Eve as the meteorology department is anticipating rain in several parts of south interior Karnataka, including Bangalore. “There are cyclonic formations in the Bay of Bengal and they will travel towards Tamil Nadu. This will lead to rainfall in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu,” said B Puttanna, meteorological Centre director in-charge
The meteorology department is hoping that cyclone ‘Thane’ is the last for the season. “We have had three cyclones in this season and this one is the strongest. We were not expecting it to turn towards Tamil Nadu’s coast. This will lead to rain in Chamarajnagar, Mysore and Bangalore. We are expecting heavy rain of nearly 55mm in 24 hours. Further, it will rain in December 31 and January 1 too,” he said.
Wind speed has picked up to 130km on the cyclone’s outer perimeter and it will hit the coast close to New Year’s Eve. “Mysore has recorded the lowest temperature of 09.7 degrees Celsius. This was because of lack of clouds and dry weather. Now, the rain will bring clouds and increase the temperature as well. Warmer days are surely ahead for Mysore and Bangalore,” he said.
The met department has issued warnings to farmers in Mandya,Chamarajanagar, Kolar and Chikkaballapur, where the rainfall will be heavy. “For those who want to go out, it is advisable to be prepared for rain and carry umbrellas,” added Puttanna.
