Bangalore: Reading about the adventures of Harry Potter or the whodunnit cases solved by Sherlock Holmes might now boost students' grades at school. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has plans for shortly starting a Reading Project to encourage students to read.
The project is aimed at students from grade five to 12. It requires the students to read books by authors like Enid Blyton, RK Narayan, HG Wells, Mark Twain, APJ Kalam, Sudha Murty and Roald Dahl.
The board has specified that all books introduced to students by schools should have been read by the teachers first. CBSE authorities have clarified that, "The project should lead to independent learning and reading skills, hence the chosen books should not be taught in class, but may be introduced through activities and to left students to read at their own pace."
The board has stated that the reading project can be developed as a formative assessment for English under the grading system. The selection of books is left to the discretion of schools, but CBSE has stipulated that "at least one book per term is to be read by every child."
Schools have also been asked to ensure students have access to library books and that sufficient budget is allocated to buy books, CDs and reference material.
