Although pro-Kannada organisations had planned a strike for October 6, some groups are planning to keep the city shut on October 5 too.

This will be the third bandh the city has seen in the past three weeks. Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) is working towards bringing the city to a halt on Friday over the Cauvery row.

Confirming this, KRV president T Narayana Gowda said 25,000-30,000 members of the organisation would gather for a rally in the city on Friday and ensure that bandh is a success.

He said KRV members from all the districts of the state, besides members of other organisations and Bangaloreans, would take part in the rally. They will gather on National College grounds and meet to decide upon the next step to take on Cauvery issue. Then, Gowda said, the entire congregation would hit the streets. He claimed that the city dwellers have told him that they support this bandh.

The other faction of KRV, led by Praveen Shetty, is not going to take part in the bandh scheduled for Friday. He said that as a bandh is going to be held on Saturday, there is no need for another.

Bandh or not, the march of the 25,000-strong gathering is sure to throw the city’s traffic out of gear. Also, it may take Bangaloreans by surprise as they are under the impression that the bandh has been called for Saturday. Sporadic protests in the city over the past week have already affected the flow of vehicles.

DNA tried to contact city police commissioner BG Jyothi Prakash Mirji and additional commissioner of police (law and order) T Suneel Kumar, but they could not be reached. Sources in the police department said KRV’s plans for a bandh on Friday had been brought to the notice of Mirji. The police commissioner may call for a meeting with KRV leaders and ask them to cancel their plans of bandh on Friday, sources said.
