Taking serious note of the lethargy in government offices, plans are on in the state to introduce yearly auditing.
S Suresh Kumar, minister for urban development, said on Wednesday, “Though the state government spends crores of rupees on the development of urban areas, programmes are implemented in a lethargic manner and public money goes down the drain. Action plans to implement the programmes efficiently have not been prepared. To better monitor the work of the officials, a new auditing system will be introduced.”
Kumar gave the urban development planning officers a dressing down, and said that the government has been warning them against complacency.
Despite that, the situation has not improved, and the government faces public ire on account of the lethargy of officials. The urban development minister said that officials would be expected to provide progress reports on tasks assigned to them every two months. He said that the commissioner of municipal administration should conduct a review of progress of works undertaken by urban local bodies every four months.
For 2011-12, the state government has released Rs123 crore for all urban local bodies, and an action plan on how they intend to make use of the funds will be prepared.
