Umar Farooq, who is a mechanic, used to earn Rs200-Rs300 every day. He is an alcoholic and drug addict. He stays in a joint family in Kushalnagar with his father Aboobakkar Siddiq, an autorickshaw driver, and brother. While they stay on the first floor of the building, Farooq stays on the ground floor. Farooq married Reshma in 2010 and she is his second wife. The police said his first wife Nasreen separated from him within three months after marriage.

Despite receiving dowry, Farooq began physically abusing Reshma one month after the marriage. He demanded more money from her family and Reshma’s family gave him two instalments of Rs5,000, and Rs10,000. Reshma told the police that Farooq told her that if she gave birth to a girl, then she would have to get Rs1 lakh from her parents’ house.

Reshma alleged that when doctors confirmed that she was pregnant with twins, Farooq fed her food laced with poison and this resulted in the death of one of the foetuses. However, when the police went to Bowring Hospital, where Reshma delivered the baby, they did not find records of her admission or delivery.

The police said in the event of Farooq feeding her food laced with poison, both Reshma and Neha must have been affected too, but this was not the case.
