An 11-year-old boy died after he was hit by a train while trying to fetch a football that had accidentally rolled onto the tracks on Friday evening.
V Vineeth was the youngest son of G Venkatesh, a resident of Kadirappa Road in Cox Town, the police said. The mishap happened near the old railway gate near Cox Town around 5.30pm, they said
Vineeth was returning home with his friends after a game of football at the Bangalore East railway station ground, the police said. While walking, the boys were dribbling with the ball when it accidentally rolled on to the railway tracks.
Vineeth ran to collect the ball, but he miscalculated the speed of the approaching train, the police said. The boy, who had bent down to get the ball, could not get away from the tracks in time, and the train hit him on his head. The boy collapsed. His friends informed his family about the accident. His parents took him to Bowring Hospital. The doctors said he was brought dead to the hospital.
The boy had died immediately after the train hit him, Cantonment railway police sub-inspector Shivaramaiah said. The boy was moved to the hospital even before the police reached the accident spot, he said.
Social worker Subramani of Cox Town, who helped the family with the police procedure, said the family requested the hospital authorities to conduct the post-mortem on Saturday morning and then hand over the body to them.
The police said they did not suspect any foul play. They have declared the death accidental.
Carelessness while on tracks has claimed lives before too. On July 12, K Vyasarajan, 69, was run over by a train while he was crossing the railway track under the Gokula bridge in Yelahanka.
The railway police said Vyasarajan was listening to music on an iPod during his morning walk and had failed to notice the train or hear its horn. He had retired as an assistant director of Doordarshan.
