With the chief of Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF) RP Sharma reinstated, BBMP engineers are set to frantically start issuing notices to those whose buildings violate bye-laws, fearing the task force's crackdown.

A source in the BBMP said the BMTF's main contention was that the Palike engineers were not taking any action against violation of building bye-laws. That was why the BMTF had booked cases against more than 185 engineers.

Fearing the BMTF's whip if they do not get down to business, the engineers have decided to serve notices to the owners of the buildings that violate bye-laws.

Sources said the decision was taken during a recent meeting held by the BBMP Engineers' and Workers' Association.

The source said the engineers would go all out to serve notice, covering as many as 10 'guilty' houses in each ward every day. Also, they will serve notices to owners of buildings against which they have received complaints from people.

A member of BBMP Engineers' and Workers' Association said the engineers have decided to go on the notice-serving spree just to save their skin.

He said until now, the engineers were overlooking violations of small buildings on humanitarian grounds, but now they would have to get tough on the owners of such buildings.

The association members said that instead of targeting owners of small buildings, the BMTF should act against big builders who have encroached government land, stormwater drains, civic amenity sites and are letting out sewage in lakes.

The member said the BMTF should take action on encroachers on the basis of the report of the committees headed by AT Ramaswamy and Dr Subramanyam instead of concentrating on small violations.
