Burglars broke into the house of former BJP state president DV Sadananda Gowda at Padeel in Puttur and decamped with valuables and cash, police said on Monday.
The exact value of the loss was yet to be ascertained. However, it would be in the range of Rs8 lakh to Rs10 lakh. Nobody was at home when burglars broke in through the rear door of the house. Gowda was in Bangalore.
According to A Subramanyeshwara Rao, the burglary might have taken place either late Sunday or during the wee hours of Monday. An armed policeman was on sentry duty at the house when the burglary took place.
Police formed a team under assistant superintendent Chandragupta to investigate the case.
“Nobody was staying in that house ever since I was elected as a member of parliament from Udupi-Chickmagalur. My family is in Mangalore. But last week, I was there for a couple of days. I left for Bangalore after locking the house. I had also informed the neighbours about my departure,” Gowda told over the phone from the airport in Bangalore.
Though the first floor of the house had been rented out, no one was staying there when the incident occurred, police said.
Dog squad and fingerprint experts visited the scene. A sniffer dog led investigators to Kotecha Hall, about 1.5km away from Gowda’s house.
