Though an average of 20 bird strike cases are reported at various airports across the country every month with a few resulting in disruption of flight service and even damage to aircraft, no such instances have been reported at the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) in the recent months.

The airport authorities attribute this to effective monitoring measures undertaken by it and setting up of a dedicated wildlife management team for averting bird hit instances at the airport.

“BIA like any other airport in India has bird activity in its vicinity. However, constant vigil and control measures have ensured that there are negligible bird hit cases. In the past months, there has been no bird hits at the airport causing emergency landings, disruption to flight operations or damage to the aircraft,” said airport officials.

Officials said its wildlife control department which keeps a constant vigil on the birds and animal (if any) movements at the airside.

Besides a trained team of bird watcher and bird chaser are deployed with bird hazing kit at the identified critical bird crossing locations in the airfield to scare and deter the birds on a routine basis from dawn till dusk to ensure that these areas are fit for flight operations at all times. In addition the bang devices (also known as Zon guns) and bird expellers are used by the team.

“BIAL utilises bang devices and bird expellers that make auditory deterrents deploys on the shoulders of the runway with a timing regulator which can be pre-set depending on the requirement and also uses laser torch and pointer as visual deterrents to scare and keep the birds away,” said officials.

As many villages are located in the airport surrounding, the authorities also organise awareness program to reduce the bird attraction in and around the airport.

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation until June about 119 bird hit instances have been reported in various airports in the country.
While in June, 23 bird hit cases were reported in February and April 21 instances were reported.
