The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) on Tuesday announced that the airport has now become the first in the country and among the first few airports globally to have participated in and received certification as per the Baggage Improvement Programme (BIP) of IATA.

This certification testifies that BIAL, in coordination with all its partner airlines and ground handlers, has put into place all the key processes that ensure high quality of baggage services and a negligible lost baggage rate.

Commenting on this achievement, GV Sanjay Reddy, managing director, BIAL said, “By participating in this program, Bengaluru International Airport has once again reaffirmed its commitment to delivering the highest standards of consistent and reliable service to airlines and passengers.

This participation and result demonstrates the passion of the workforce towards being the front runner in airport efficiency initiatives and reflects the commitment to continuous improvement.”

Mishandled baggage costs the aviation industry $3.3 billion every year. It also affects 42 million passengers annually and is the second most important factor in having a pleasant trip, according to an IATA CATS survey.

BIP provides the industry with solutions that address all causes of baggage mishandling and aims at reducing the rate of mishandled baggage by improving handling processes to ensure passengers and their baggage are reunited at final destination.

Sunil Chopra, assistant director, IDFS, India and Nepal said, “By implement the solutions pursuant to our Baggage Improvement Programme, BIAL has brought recognition to India. It’s something we can all be proud of. IATA initiatives are aimed at making the journey more comfortable and the most pleasant one.”
