Dream Merchants event management company has clarified that the Blenders Pride Bangalore Fashion Week will not use music licensed by Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL).
In its release, the company said it had obtained a licence to use the music administered by Novex Communications Pvt Ltd (www.novex.in) for the show between February 2 and February 5.
Earlier, in a press release, PPL had stated that no music could be played during the Bangalore Fashion Week (BFW). It said failure to abide by the rule could invite heavy penalty and /or imprisonment against the organisers of the show.
Dream Merchants said PPL was not the only licensing body for recorded music.
It was only representing its own member music labels. The PPL release was not only incorrect but also misleading. It was aimed at discrediting the event and its organisers.
Dream Merchants had obtained a licence to use and exploit the music administered by Novex Communications and on January 16, 2012, they had communicated it to PPL offices. Despite this, PPL had gone on the offensive and they were creating an unjust atmosphere days before the event.
“PPL is trying to gain monopoly over the market by threatening people like us who take licences from their smaller competitors. They are harassing us by threatening to get an injunction against usage of their music. We see this as nothing more than an arm-twisting method aimed at sabotaging the event,” the release added.
Feroz Khan, creative director of Dream Merchants said: “We have always followed the letter of the law, and have obtained all necessary and legal permissions for our events. I hope we as a community stand together in warding off unnecessary pressure tactics.”
