Passengers can soon hope to have enough elbow room at the Bengaluru International Aiport (BIA), what with work on expanding its existing passenger terminal scheduled to commence in September this year.

A meeting of the Board of Directors of the Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) on Friday approved the design and layout plan to expand Terminal 1. The Rs600-crore plan proposes to expand the terminal space by 70%, creating additional passenger space of 40,000 square metres and increasing the annual terminal capacity to 17 million passengers, which is expected to suffice till 2015.

The work will be completed in 18 months. The existing terminal capacity is 12 million passengers per year.

The airport is already operating at nearly 80% of its capacity. In 2009, BIA handled 9.4 million passengers. With air passenger traffic picking up over the last few months, it will not be long before the airport’s capacity falls short of requirement.

In December, domestic airlines carried over 30% more passengers compared to the same month last year.  The Bangalore air passenger traffic is projected to rise 15% in 2010-11 compared to the current fiscal, 2009-2010.

After expansion, the terminal will sport an enhanced and modern design elevation. The work includes fresh landscaping from Trumpet Interchange, on the Bellary Road. The landscape will be a representation of the essence of the city’s floral wealth.

The expansion project has been designed by Global architectural firm HOK. The construction partners for this project will be selected through a competitive bidding, BIAL said in a release.

New helmsmen
