Bangalore’s deputy mayor S Harish has no right to clarify on the garbage scam. Only the mayor and BBMP commissioner have the right to do so, says JD(S) leader Padmanabha Reddy.

Hitting back at Harish for airing his views on the scam, Reddy said that under the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (KMC) Act, 1976, only the mayor or commissioner has the right to clarify such issues.

In the meantime, by not consulting BBMP mayor R Shardamma and Bangalore district in-charge and home minister, R Ashoka, in handling the issue, Harish has earned the wrath of the BJP.

Party sources said Ashoka, Dasarahalli MLA Muniraju and Jayanagar MLA Vijaykumar expressed their dissatisfaction over Harish’s conduct.

At a recent meeting with elected representatives, chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda had advised him to not comment on the issue. But ignoring his advice, Harish conducted a meeting without the mayor, commissioner and ruling party leader.

Addressing a news conference this week, Harish denied Reddy’s allegation that BJP misused public money by awarding contracts to clear garbage without floating tenders.

Harish said `3.6 lakh was paid to the contractors every month besides garbage payment according to the tender floated in Reddy’s ward.

Reddy should resign for providing wrong information to the public, he said. Reddy said he would resign from the corporation if the ruling BJP could disprove the scam. He invited Harish and BJP leaders for a public debate on this.
