A 40-year-old mother of a woman  advocate practising in the city civil court, has been arrested by the Vyalikaval police on charges of cheating. The police say that the accused, Bhagya, along with her fireman husband and lawyer daughter Rajini allegedly cheated the public of several crores.

Bhagya, residing at Fourth Cross, Nagappa Street, Palace Guttahalli, has been involved in a chit fund business for 15 years.

She also held an office anonymously, where she ran a share market business. Police inspector, Abdul Khadar, said that the first complaint was filed against Bhagya on October 25, while more than 60 complaints have been registered in a single day, and more are expected to come as the news of her arrest has spread.

Bhagya fled from Nagappa street and stayed with her husband and advocate daughter at Kallasandra, Konankunte, in their rented house. In order to save herself from the people who had invested in her chit fund, she recently purchased a house for 75 lakhs at Nagappa street, and sold it for 85 lakhs, and fled once again.

“Interrogations are going on, as she is suspected to have cheated more people. Though she has not revealed the details of her daughter’s and husband’s whereabouts, we are confident that they will be caught,” said police constable MN Rudrappa. The police allege that Rajini and Narayana supported her in the chit funds business by getting her new clients regularly. Both Rajini and Narayana have been absconding from the city ever since Bhagya`s arrest. Bhagya was arrested soon after her mobile was traced after the first complaint was lodged against her.

More than 500 people staged a protest outside the Vyalikaval police station and demanded that she be punished. The police have taken her into custody for 14 days for interrogation after producing her in the court.

Police said a hunt is on for Rajini and Narayana.
