In a year’s time, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) plans to set up rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems at all depots and major bus stations.

KR Srinivasa, managing director, BMTC, said the step is an effort to make the corporation more environmental-friendly.

“If we have to encourage people to reduce the use of private vehicles and use public transport and be environment-friendly, we have to set an example too, in terms of being environment-friendly. These methods need not be limited to using public transport.

Rainwater harvesting is one of the many ways that could be easily adopted. Moreover, the facility, apart from recharging groundwater, would also help us save water, which can then be reused in our depots itself for our various uses,” he said.

Currently, six depots— Yelahanka (depot 11 and 30), Hebbal, Jigani, Kannahalli and Sriganarakavillu — have RWH facilities. The BMTC has 40 depots in the city.

Shivaswamy R, executive engineer, BMTC, said that RWH will save water in a large way at the depots, considering the amount of water used there for washing buses. “Everyday, we use about 40,000 litres of water for cleaning buses. Since this is used from borewells, we realised that it is a huge depletion of groundwater. We hope that with rainwater harvesting, we will be able to recharge the groundwater,” said Shivaswamy.

By installing RWH system, each depot can save up to 20 lakh litres of water during the monsoon season, he said. “We plan to put up a tank that can hold 50,000 litres to 1 lakh litres of water. This will be ready by the next monsoon season,” said Shivaswamy.

He added that orders had already been given, to begin work at various depots in the city.

Each depot will require about 30 days to set up RWH facility.
