Bangalore: A score of adorable tiny tots will be demanding that we leave behind a green, inhabitable earth as they compete to be Prince and Princess 2009 -- a beauty pageant and talent contest aimed at being aplatform for children to voice their opinions on environmental issues. Sureshwara, president of Raashtra Bandhu, a five-year-old environmental NGO that will be part of the event, will speak to the children about climate change. "The session will focus on the causes, effects and remedies of climate change. It will help children understand these issues. It's the most discussed topic in 2009. The human community has caused considerable damage to the earth," he says.
Kavithasree M, from Young Choice Hunter Events, organisers of the contest, explains the huge contrast in the times that the older generation grew up in and the times today. "Kids today are exposed to technologies that didn't exist before. They're smart. So we wanted to give them an outlet outside of just school contests. The idea was a much bigger platform. And what better issue to deal with than the most urgent one, which is global warming," she says.
Aware of the power of the young talented lot, Sureshwara says, "These 20 odd children in the contest have the ability to influence their parents and their peers. They can discuss and contribute constructively. Once they are aware, they can request elders to not use fossil fuels and switch to renewable forms of energy.
