To expedite the process of issuing passports, ministry of external affairs has decided to open Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) in major Indian cities.

The ambitious project aims at drastically improving the time taken for issuing a passport from the existing 45 days to three days. It will also help the authorities issue passport the same day for tatkal category applicants.

“Government plans to open 77 PSKs across the country. The project will first be launched in Bangalore and Chandigargh,” Minister of State for External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor, said on Monday.

“After monitoring their functioning, other PSKs would be opened in various stages next year,” he added.

Tharoor said steps would be taken to improve facilities and amenities at passport offices and also to reduce the processing time for issuing passports.

Stating that eliminating touts and middlemen, who exploit passport seekers, was one of the main agendas before the department, Tharoor said police help have been sought to deal with touts hanging around passport offices.

On Biometric passports, Tharoor said work was progressing with a target of issuing new passports on biometric format from June next, he said.

Software major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is streamlining the over Rs1,000 crore national project which is being built under the Buy-Own-Operate-Transfer (Boot) model.

TCS has been given the end-to-end responsibility of implementing the project, which is also one of the largest mission critical e-Governance projects under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP).

The project is strictly complying with the ISO 27001 standards at all the three levels-user level, application and datacentre level and network level.

Plans are afoot to set up two national level call centres to handle any query related to
passports.
