For the many students who performed at the 64th Independence Day celebrations at Manekshaw Parade ground, the hard work of more than a month finally paid off. From the different classical dance forms of India to the story of freedom fighter Mundaragi Bhimaraya, these youngsters reveled in the diversity that is India.

Bharat P, one of the nearly 600 students of BBMP High School that got the first place for their performance on Mundaragi Bhimaraya, was elated. “It is a hat-trick. This is the third time that we are getting the first place for our performance on Independence Day. We have been preparing for over a month and our work has paid off.”

Senior teacher of the school TD Jayalakshmi credits the children and staff for the achievement. “These children have been dedicatedly practicing every evening at the police parade ground over the past one month. It took a lot of effort to bring these students together. And they seem to have understood the situation too as they came together, regardless of which class they are from or which batch, and so on,” she said.

“It is like winning the world cup,” said one of the students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, holding up the trophy that the team received.

B Jilani of Samarthana Trust for the Disabled, one of the two teams representing the physically-disabled at the parade, was excited before the event.

“Some of us may not be able to see. But we know that there are hundreds of people here. To have an opportunity to show everyone that we are just as capable as the others and not anything lesser is wonderful.”
