The manager of State Bank of India’s (SBI’s) JC Nagar branch has filed a police complaint, alleging that the bank employees pocketed soiled currency notes to the tune of Rs1.9 lakh.

Although the incident took place in July last year, it is only recently that the complaint was filed. Assistant general manager GK Pujar filed the complaint with Kalasipalyam police, seeking detailed investigation into the issue. The JC Nagar branch, as part of its regular work, collects soiled notes from other SBI branches and deposits them to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to get new notes in lieu of them.
Pujar’s complaint states that last July, as part of the routine procedure, deputy general manager N Nagraj asked about 14 employees of the bank to count the soiled notes before sending them for replacement. After the notes were sent to the RBI, the central bank said that although the SBI stated it was sending soiled notes worth about Rs2.5 crore, a sum of Rs1.9 lakh was missing.
When the SBI officials questioned the employees involved in counting the notes, all of them feigned ignorance. The police officials said even the CCTV footage of the procedure of counting notes provided no clues.
The bank officials then warned the staff to come clean or else they would have to face police probe. It was then that a few of the bank employees involved in counting the notes confessed to having stolen them. The bank officials then filed a police complaint, seeking full investigation.
Kalasipalyam police inspector V Narayanaswamy said they were investigating and going through the CCTV footage again to get more leads about the case.
