As economic slowdown stares us in the face once again, it’s the placement programme at some engineering colleges in the city that is facing the heat now. However, the institutes are talking various steps to ensure that most students get hired.

Acharya Institute of Technology has announced that students who have already secured job offers cannot try for other companies that come to the college for placement, unless 60-70% students from each department are absorbed.

Rahul Sinha, student co-ordinator of the institute, said the college management had made the decision anticipating a slowdown and wanted to ensure that most students get jobs. Sinha said the college was holding pre-placement sessions to prepare the students for technical and aptitude tests and interviews.

CBM Bhushan, director (placements), Acharya Institute of Technology, said about 100 students of the 2012 batch had been placed till now. “The recruitments have been so far, so good. We will have to wait and watch the trend in the next two weeks,” he said.

No hike in pay package
KR Venugopal, principal, University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), said the companies were offering the same pay as they did last year.

Varun Melanta, director of MVJ College of Engineering (MVJCE), where placements will start on Tuesday, too, said the companies are offering the same pay as the previous year.

UVCE principal said, currently, 500 out of 800 eligible students have got at least one job offer. He said so far 20 companies have come for recruitment and the college is trying to invite 60 more companies.

Melanta said, in MVJCE, final-year students were undergoing training in aptitude, technical and soft skills. Mock interviews, too, were being conducted, wherein people from the industry assess students, give feedback and tell them their drawbacks.
