The inauguration of Sir CV Raman Hospital is set to be postponed by three more months due to the delay in construction work. The 250-bed hospital is expected to cater to the needs of the patients from Bangalore East.

It may be recalled that former health minister B Sriramulu had laid the foundation for the hospital on August 24, 2009. He had announced that the hospital would be functioning within 24 months. However, the snail’s pace of construction work has already delayed the inauguration of the hospital by six months and it is expected to be ready only after three more months.

Meanwhile, the department of health is yet to take measures to depute more than 180 employees (including doctors, nurses and paramedical staff) to the new hospital. According to reliable sources, the health department has decided to shift 70 employees from the Government Tuberculosis Hospital to Sir CV Raman Hospital.

“The authorities have decided to depute all of us to the new hospital. I am not sure whether there is a provision at the new hospital to treat people suffering from tuberculosis,’’ said Dr Sandhya, medical superintendent, Government Tuberculosis Hospital.

The state government has spent `27 crore for the construction of the hospital. According to CV Raman Nagar MLA S Raghu, the government plans to increase the number of beds to 500 from 250 in the near future. “Three more floors will be added to increase the number of beds,” said Raghu.

Meanwhile, rumours on the closing down the Government Tuberculosis Hospital have disturbed the patients availing treatment here. If the rumours are anything to go by, the closure of the hospital will be a big blow for people from Krishnarajapuram, Hoskote, Ramamurthy Nagar, Banaswadi and Lingarajapuram in Bangalore East. “It will be difficult for patients from nearby areas to go all the way to the SDS Tuberculosis and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases situated near Nimhans,’’ said a patient on the condition of anonymity.

When asked about the rumours of shifting the hospital, Dr Sandhya said that the authorities are yet to take a decision. “These are rumours. No final decision has been taken either to shift or close the existing hospital,’’ she said.
