After waiting for 25 days, Bangaloreans saw a glimpse of the rainy season which was supposed to begin on June 1. Some areas in the city received trace rainfall on Sunday.

Though the monsoon officially started in the first week of June, rains have been playing hide and seek with people of the city. Almost no rain occurred since June first week though it was expected to rain almost daily.

The meteorological department officials, however, don’t seem too bothered as they say the city is supposed to receive a certain quota of rain and it may occur in a day or over a period of many days. “In June, Bangalore is expected to receive around 87 mm of rain. This is the ideal amount of rain for the city for the whole month. It can occur in a day or over a span of many days,” said a duty officer at the Meteorological Centre.

The city has been getting cloudy in afternoons without any rain for the past two weeks. However, people in the city were pleasantly surprised on Sunday evening with some areas receiving trace rainfall. “Yelahanka received trace rainfall while HAL received no rainfall at all,” the officer said.

“Clouds have been pushed away by heavy winds. All these days, an upper air cyclonic circulation with a wind speed of 40 nautical miles—which is around 40 to 50 kilometres an hour—has been hovering above the city,” she said.
