Bangalore city traffic police have won the gold award for effective implementation of BTRAC 2010, a first-of-its-kind project that used innovative use of technology in e-governance. The award was declared by the government of India, department of administrative reforms, and public grievances on February 5. The award will be presented to the city police in Aurangabad on February 10, by the Union government.

The city police was recognised for being the most modern technology-driven traffic enforcement system in the country. And there is more to be proud of—Bangalore is also the first city in the country to enforce 100% technology and making the whole system paperless.

The implementation of BTRAC, which was started in 2008, has resulted in effective traffic enforcement, traffic regulations, and prevention of accidents.

Commissioner of police, Shankar M Bidari, said, “For the past two years, large-scale development works like the Metro, fly-overs, underpasses and over-bridges were carried out.

However, the city traffic police, by implementing the BTRAC, have achieved unprecedented success in traffic enforcement.”
“This is the first time the Bangalore city police have been awarded in the use of innovative technology. This certainly has created history,” he added.

Additional commissioner of police traffic, Praveen Sood, said, “The percentage of notices generated using interceptors has doubled, as through the BTRAC several notices have been issued to traffic violators. In 2009, 35% of the vehicles in the city have been issued notices, while in 2010, it has gone up to 61%.”

Due to the addition of south-east and north-east divisions in 2007 and 2008, respectively, the area of Bangalore city has increased above 1200 sq km, and despite that the traffic police successfully managed to curb accidents in the city. “For the past two-and-half years, the traffic police have been working hard to implement the BTRAC 2010 project, and their efforts have won them distinction,” said Bidari.

The traffic police succeeded in bringing down the accident rates despite Bangalore being the second largest in vehicle population, next to New Delhi.

Bidari offered his special gratitude to Dr Mahesh, who is a member of the BTRAC committee, in guiding the city police in implementing the project.
