On Wednesday morning, Nitesh Bera’s wife Uma Bera was clueless about her husband’s whereabouts. She made repeated calls to top police officials and some of her relatives were in touch with police officers. Uma pleaded with the police to inform her if Nitesh’s was kidnapped and if he was alive.

Uma said Bera did not socialise with his employees or neighbouring shopkeepers. “He always came home in time. I used to call him at least 20 times a day and he used to keep me informed about his whereabouts.”

“When he did not come home after 15 minutes, I again called his cellphone. But he did not answer clearly. He spoke to me in Bengali, a language he stopped speaking a few years earlier. We used to speak Hindi at home, hence I did not understand why he began speaking Bengali,” she added.

Uma also requested police officers deployed for security at her house to give her some information. But they had no answers. Uma’s young children were not aware of the gravity of the situation and even asked Uma about their father, but she had no answers.

“I didn’t suspect anybody since my husband only concentrated on his work,” said Uma, adding that all she had in mind is her children’s future.

On Wednesday evening, a quiet crowd sat outside the Bera household. While they knew Bera was dead, Uma was still in the dark about her husband’s fate. Mithun, one of Bera’s employees at the jewellery shop, was one of the last persons to speak to him on Tuesday night.

“They are a young couple and have two kids. There are seven children inside that house right now and a few members of the family are taking care of Uma didi. She is crying. She keeps asking about what happened to her husband. She just wants to know.”

Clad in a blue saree and her hair askew, she looked lost as she scanned the crowd — the police, Nitesh’s employees and media — outside her house. At 7 pm, she came out of the house and pleaded with the crowd to news of her husband. “What has happened to him?” she repeated over and over again, but nobody answered.

Uma asked Nitesh’s employees: “What has happened to him.” One of the employees, who was in tears, confirmed her worst fears with a nod of his head and she broke down. Holding on to one of the policemen, she asked again in Hindi: “What has happened to him? Please tell me.” Later, her sister-in-law took Uma back into the house.

Nitesh’s brother Ashish Kumar Bera said: “The manager called me and said Nitesh had been kidnapped. Our parents are coming from Kolkata tonight. They don’t know that my brother is dead,” he said.
