What do poor stray dogs around metro stations have to do with the launch of Namma Metro? Why, they may go berserk upon seeing large crowd during inauguration and, well, bite people.

This is an apprehension that Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) holds. It has thus decided to go on a dog-hunt. It is going to catch the stray dogs on and around MG Road , Parade Ground and Byappanahalli metro station.  Joint director of the BBMP’s animal husbandry department, Pervez Ahmad Piran, has instructed assistant directors of the east zone of the department to round up each stray dog in these areas.

Piran said there are 10-15 freewheeling pups in MG Road-Parade Ground area and 20-22 in areas around Byappanahalli metro station. Two dog-catching vehicles will visit these areas on Wednesday—a day before metro’s launch—to catch hold of the pooches. On Friday, the dogs would be released in the areas from where they were picked.

“This is done for the safety of the public as well as the VIPs during the function,” Piran explained. He said there was a concern that if an incident of dog-bite occurs during the high-profile inauguration, it would bring shame to the Silicon Valley of India. The first phase of Namma Metro, between Byappanahalli and MG Road , will be inaugurated on Thursday.

The inauguration ceremony will be held at Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Grounds. More than 40,000 people, including Union ministers and dignitaries from state as well as central governments, are expected to take part in it.

The Palike has taken up asphalting of roads and beautification of footpaths on the stretch from MG Road to Byappanahalli metro station. For the work, it is shelling crores of rupees drawn from its emergency fund. Leaving no stone unturned and going by the dictum of better safe than sorry, it has decided to round up man’s best friend too.
