For those celebrating Valentine’s Day at Forum Mall in Koramangala, a group of about 15 people suddenly breaking into dance perhaps added that extra spice to their celebrations.
Even as a crowd gathered around dancers taking their positions, there were exclamations of, “Oi, Yuvi!” bursting from the crowd, as the dancers put on masks of Yuvraj Singh.
As the dancers moved to popular Kannada and Hindi numbers, the excited audience, stood around, some scrambling to take pictures, others watching in rapt silence, and a few others whistling in reaction to the moves, but most wondering what the whole scene was about.
“I knew that the dance was something about Yuvraj Singh, which was quite obvious from the fact that they wearing Yuvi masks, but I was not sure what exactly it was. I figured this was some kind of a show of support and love for the cricketer,” said Naresh N, who was standing among the audience.
As the five minute performance came to an end, the audience was met with another surprise: the performance was by people they listened to every day, but never really saw. A popular radio station in the city had come together to express their love for Yuvraj Singh and wish him a quick recovery, in the form of a flash mob.
Patpataki Shruthi, a radio jockey explains their performance, “This dance was dedicated to Yuvraj Singh, who is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. In a country where cricket is a religion and cricketers Gods, an ailing cricketer deserves to get all the attention of the citizens; and what other day but valentine’s to show your love?”
According to ‘Rockstar’ Rohith, another RJ, “Most people’s Valentine’s Day is about making the day special for someone else, someone you love. We all love Yuvi and he has given some really good moments to cricket. At a time like this, he needs our support and we are here to give him what support we can,” he said.
“Considering that we all eat and sleep cricket and during important matches, our entire schedule revolves around cricket, the fact that Yuvi was suffering from cancer was a rude shock and I think the entire country was affected by it. We hope he gets well soon,” added Shruthi. “We will be putting up videos of the flash mob on twitter and face book and we are hoping that Yuvi sees them and receives our best wishes,” she said.
