Uma Bera knew that her husband was kidnapped within 20 minutes after the incident. The police said Uma spoke to Nitesh Bera thrice, but did not provide the details of the conversations to the police. She told them that her husband was in trouble, said an investigating officer.

Nitesh spoke to her in Bengali at 10 pm and said he had been kidnapped. “Nitesh told his wife not to get worried and he would return home in 30 minutes. He directed her to give jewellery to a person who would come riding his scooter,” said Dilip, Uma’s brother, adding that Bera instructed her not to inform the police.

Later, a man met Uma at her home and collected a 80-gram gold chain and Rs2,000 cash. When Uma demanded her husband be released, the man said the ransom was not sufficient. When Uma pleaded with him, he called his accomplices from her house and told them that a largesum of cash or jewellery was not kept in the Bera household.

After some time, the gangsters called Uma from Bera’s cellphone, instructing her to give gold jewellery from the shop. Bera also called his employee Mithun and told him to take jewellery from the shop and give it to a person who would arrive shortly. Bera also told Mithun that he had been kidnapped, but instructed him to desist from informing the police.

However, Uma told Mithun to take the jewellery from the shop and give it to the gang’s courier near a hotel. The courier, who saw Mithun informing the other employees and neighbour shopkeepers about the incident, fled, said Dilip.

She approached the police after Bera’s cellphone was switched off at midnight. Even at this stage, Uma withheld information from the police. She went to Ulsoorgate police station, but a sub-inspector, Niraj, spoke to her for 30 minutes, but refused to file a complaint. He said the incident took place in the jurisdiction of the Ashoknagar police station.

At 1.15 pm, Ashoknagar police station officers took Uma, who was alone, to the police station and filed the complaint.
