Phani Prakash will surely think twice before going for another operation. After MS Ramaiah hospital’s shocking blunder, he will do so and he cannot be blamed, not after what he has been through.

Prakash, 30, a resident of railway quarters in Yelahanka, can’t walk or bend his back properly thanks to MS Ramaiah Memorial hospital. The doctor from the hospital, while operating on his lower back, left a broken piece of a forceps during surgery, thereby incapacitating Prakash.

Prakash got admitted to MS Ramaiah on January 31, 2010, as he was suffering from severe pain in his lower back and left lower limb. The doctor, Ranganath, diagnosed the problem as L4-L5 intervertebral disc prolapse.  Prakash was operated on February 1, 2010.

After the dressing was done, Ranganath asked him to get an X-ray done. Prakash was discharged on February 3. But then came the shocking disclosure: Ranganath told Prakash that a broken piece of forceps was left in his body. The doctor told him that he had tried to remove it, but had been unsuccessful.

Ranganath reassured Prakash by saying that it would be set-right in a few days.

When the pain shot up, Prakash tried to seek an appointment with Ranganath on April 13, but was unable to do so. Later, a visit to a private hospital the next day and an X-ray confirmed the cause of the pain: a broken piece of a forecep in his lower back. Due to the forceps, the area had got infected. Prakash had no option but to get admitted at MS Ramaiah again.

This time, Dr Naresh Shetty attended to him as Ranganath was not available. But when the pain still persisted, Prakash met Ranganath. But the doctor shocked Prakash by asking him to visit a psychiatrist since as per his diagnosis, there was nothing wrong with his back. Prakash was left with no option but to seek treatment from another private hospital.

Unable to function normally due to the hospital’s negligence, Prakash filed a complaint at the consumer dispute redressal forum against the hospital and Ranganath asking for a compensation of Rs20 lakh.

After the Karnataka Medical Council deemed it as a case of medical negligence, the Bangalore Urban 3rd Additional District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum directed the hospital and Dr Ranganath, consultant, Department of Orthopaedics, to pay Rs6.5 lakh as compensation. The forum also directed them to pay a sum of Rs10,000 to the complainant. They granted 30 days time to pay the compensation.
