The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has made special arrangements for the immersion of idols in selected lakes in an eco-friendly way, as part of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

The BDA has constructed kalyanis (immersion tanks) at six lakes around Bangalore — Jakkur-Sampigehalli, Kothnur, Konasandra, Thallaghattapura, Ullalu and Kommaghatta — for immersion of the idols from 10am to 8pm between September 11 and September 13.

The BDA has appointed staff to help people with the immersion. It has urged citizens to avoid immersion of idols painted with artificial colours. Such idols could affect bio-diversity of the lakes.

One of the main attractions of the festival will be a Rs5-lakh idol of the Swastik Yuvaka Sangha. The 5.4-foot idol is adorned with American diamonds. It was made in Mumbai, although the diamonds were encrusted in Hubli.

The sangha is spending Rs30 lakh on the celebrations spread over five days. The function is open for public viewing. Voluntary donations will go to the Shree Ramana Maharshi Academy for Blind and Deepa Cultural Academy for the Blind, Sridhar, the president of the sangha, said.
