In a bid to ensure transparency in road works across the city, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has now embraced GIS (geographical information system) based road history.

Speaking with media persons,  BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah said the Palike would be the first civic body in the country to implement GIS-based road history, “With this, we will be able to keep a tab on all road and road-related works, including asphalting, footpath repair and drain desilting work,” he said.

Authorities concerned would be required to provide details such as condition of road, and date on which it was last asphalted, within a 40-day-period. The information will be made available on the public domain, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Siddaiah said around 93,135 roads across the city had been captured on GIS and given a unique identity number.  The roads have been classified as arterial, sub-arterial, inter-ward roads and roads within a ward.

‘’All details including photos pertaining to 13,000-odd km road network in the city will be available at the click of a button. The road history will be the ‘mother document’ the BBMP will share with other civic agencies, including Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Bangalore Electricity Supply Company to ensure coordination,’’ he said.

He added that the BBMP had already adopted the GIS system and issued property identification number to around 16.5 lakh properties registered under it.

This process will involve the respective engineers, GIS specialist and a data entry person. A system has been developed for the process, wherein the engineer can initiate a work process and mark road works along with the segment whose history has been gathered. Additionally, the system can also be used to initiate a new job.
