The Bengaluru International Airport (BIA), which has embarked on expanding its existing passenger terminal building and apron is also expanding its cargo facilities.

The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), promoters of the airport said that with the cargo expected to grow at about 9 % during 2011-12, a number of new initiatives have been taken.

Hari Marar, president-Airport Operations, BIAL, told DNA that with the city’s perfect geographic positioning, economic activities, environmental aspects, and infrastructure, BIA is poised to evolve into the future cargo hub of South India, which would connect the West to the East.

He added that, to boost the cargo growth in the region, a few new initiatives have been taken by BIAL, which include establishment of a trans-shipment facility supported by customs to facilitate the movement of trans-shipment cargo, plant and animal quarantine office, and textile committee office, which will benefit the garment and apparel industry at the airport.

This apart, in the near future, an import additional drug controller office is expected which would facilitate an increase in pharmaceutical goods.

Marar said that BIA, which has a total cargo-handling capacity of about 350,000 MT, handled about 222,778 MT of cargo in 2010-11 and witnessed a 27 % growth of cargo tonnage during the same period, which was dominated by engineering goods, electrical and electronic goods, and garments.

“There is also a considerable amount of pharmaceutical and perishables, which are handled at the airport. From an industry perspective, imports have also grown tremendously due to a high demand in electrical and electronics and machinery and spare parts. Besides, the state government’s proposal to promote an aerospace special economic zone adjacent to the airport boundary would further facilitate the cargo growth of the region,” he said.

BIA has a cargo village, which acts as a warehouse to most of the global freight forwarders like DHL, Nippon and, Keuhne & Nagel. The airport’s two-cargo warehouse operators are Air India SATS and Menzies Aviation with Bobba Group.
