With monsoon showers lashing the city every other day, chances of air traffic being affected are high, on account of poor visibility and heavy downpours.

Flights could also be diverted if landing conditions at the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) are poor.

The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has taken special precaution to see that flights operate on schedule, with minimal changes.

“We have undertaken special precautions during the monsoon to ensure that flights operate with minimal hindrance. All airport infrastructure is thoroughly checked and maintained to the highest possible standards,” said an official.

The frequency of painting the airfield markings has been increased to ensure that there is no reduction in the visibility and clarity of markings. The frequency of testing of friction levels on the runway has also increased, as the airport braces for the monsoon.

Specific checks are conducted to ensure adequacy of mooring mechanisms of all ground-handling equipment so as to ensure immobility under severe wind conditions.

On the airfield and the terminal building, all sewage and drain outlets have also undergone thorough inspection and cleaning. As part of this, the drains and sewage facilities are de-silted and de-scaled. This is done to ensure unrestricted flow of water out of the airport’s facilities.

BIAL is also working in coordination with the civic authorities responsible for the areas located outside the airport, as they have carried out inspection at the outlets outside the airport to ensure that the water and sewage drains away, unrestricted.

“All the airport partners are working in tandem to ensure that all other factors are looked into. They are also keeping a watch to ensure smooth functioning of all airport operations,” the official added.
