From silicon city to pollution city to Ayush City: this is the dream that yoga, naturopathy and ayurveda medicine practitioners have envisaged for Bangalore.

The International Conference on Yoga, Naturopathy and Arogya Expo 2012, which kick started on Thursday, is hoping to make that dream come true. The conference has over 250 stalls dedicated to the practice and effects of Ayush.
From tracing the evolution of yoga from the pre- pathanjali age to today’s terrace gardens turned into meditation centres with the city’s prominent buildings forming the backdrop, to setting up demonstrations on the effect that the practice of yoga will have on the body and mind, the Arogya Expo will focus on prevention rather than cure.
Speaking at the inauguration of the expo, Speaker DH Shankaramurthy said that India had been a front runner in various fields of medicine, science and technology as well as literature.
“While we have forgotten all of this, the current trends with regard to the growing popularity of yoga and naturopathy as a preventive measure against diseases has shown that our memories are coming back,” he said.
Minister for medical education SA Ramdas said that it was necessary today to practically demonstrate how yoga could work for the increasingly questioning population.
He added that the growing popularity of yoga and naturopathy was being encouraged in the form of introducing it in educational institutions. He said that there was a need to focus on research and development in the field and the coming years would see further research to find a cure for HIV and other diseases.
Union minister of state for health and family welfare, S Gandhiselvan, said that the National Rural Health Mission was a positive step with regard to mainstreaming Ayush systems for the effective provision of healthcare to the masses.
