It is hot, it is cold. It is the time you get sick.

With such fluctuations in weather, doctors say those with low immunity are the most vulnerable.

As mercury rises, many fall ill after taking cold drinks and food.

“There are big differences in temperatures. Evenings are cool and day time is very hot. Hence many people begin to eat cold food during the day. For those with low immunity, viruses will have a field day,” said Dr Dwijendra Prasad, consultant, internal medicine, BGS Global Hospitals.

Many are complaining of pain in the ear and throat.

“This is because heat is dry now. There is no humidity in the air. We tend to drink cold water and cold juice which can lead to tonsillitis and other infections. But the infection in the throat can be very severe leading to ear pain too,” he said. Chicken pox cases emerge as human body takes time to adjust to the increasing temperature. “I’ve seen three cases of chicken pox already this year. It is the time when the body is vulnerable to infections,” he said.

Those planning cool solutions by heading to swimming pools must be careful since infections spread rampantly in pools.

“In pools, people get infections faster as the hygiene levels may not be great. Since the body will not be used to the water, people are prone to get water infections affecting the ear and nose,” said Dr Archana Sampat, wellness physician.

Eating warm and fresh food along with drinking fluids at room temperature is the best way to stay away from sickness.

“In winter months, the metabolism goes down and we feel lazy to exercise which makes us prone to sickness. We have to eat lots of sprouts, fresh fruits and vegetables which will increase immunity and help in fighting infections better,” she said.
