It looks like the city police have a tariff for human life. On Saturday, nine-year-old Tejas, son of an autodriver, drowned in a swimming pool in a resort in Nelamangala, but his death has not been taken seriously as the police are not taking efforts to investigate. Had it been the son of an influential man, would the police have treated the case the same way?

Earlier the police did admit that the incident took place  due to negligence on the part of the school authorities. They said the resort too  needs to be blamed as it did not have  dedicated lifeguards.

On Saturday, Class 3 students of Mother Teresa School, were taken on a school trip to Residency Holiday Resort, where Tejas drowned in a swimming pool.

Tejas was initially playing in the children’s pool, but when he came out of the pool, he accidentally fell into the adults’ pool, which is 4-feet deep at the shallow end and 10-feet-deep at the deep end. Nobody noticed him falling into the water. When some children finally saw him, they raised an alarm.

Schoolteachers took him out of the pool and rushed him to nearby Sparsha Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Police till now have not traced the resort owners. An FIR was filed without names on it, as the police could not spot anybody in the resort after the tragedy.

On Saturday, other schools too had come to the resort for a picnic.

Despite the presence of several students, the resort authorities had not taken initiatives to place security personnel or life guards.

Some said that the resort was run illegally. However, the sub-inspector of Nelamangala, Maruthi, refuted the statement. He said: “It’s just an allegation that the resort is  illegally run. It might have the documents from the panchayat, but we are yet to ascertain that.”

He added, “It is not a resort where the politicians or other biggies go, it’s a small resort, so there is no need of taking the issue seriously. But we will definitely check the documents and permits given to run the resort.”

“Once we find someone, we will conduct an enquiry,” he added.

“Even if we arrest them, they can easily get a bail,” he said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the resort is being run by five persons.

Deputy Superintendent of police Nelamangala, Chinnaswamy said that it is technically not a resort.

“It was specially designed for children with a playground, toys and small pool.”

If the pool is not meant for the adults, why was the pool deep? And how did Tejas die? Police are yet to answer these questions.

Resort authorities were not available for comment and the resort remained closed on Sunday.
