A 20-year-old Yemeni student was beaten up by an autorickshaw driver after his car hit the rickshaw at the Kamaraja Road and Cubbon Road junction near MG Road around 12.30am on Tuesday.

The Yemeni, identified as Rami, a second year engineering student at a private college in Kalyana Nagar, was driving along with his friend Yousef Ghazi, a Palestine national and a BCom student at Garden City College, when the incident occurred. Both are residents of HRBR Layout in Kalyana Nagar.

According to the Cubbon Park (law and order) police with whom Ghazi lodged a complaint, a little after mid-night, the rickshaw driven by Idhayat, a resident of Tavarakere, and the Indica car driven by Ghazi came from the Cauvery junction.

Ghazi hit the rickshaw which was in front of his car while it was taking a left turn to Cubbon Road. Both then stopped their vehicles in the middle of the road and started a quarrel, while Rami later joined his friend.

As the quarrel progressed, Idayath allegedly beat up Rami, who sustained injuries on his lips and nose.

Ghazi lodged a complaint with the Cubbon Park (law and order) police, accusing the rickshaw driver of assaulting him and his friend Rami. Idayath too had filed a complaint against Ghazi with the Cubbon Park traffic police alleging that the Indica car driven by Ghazi had hit his rickshaw.

While the Cubbon Park law and order police had summoned both Rami and Ghazi to the station on Tuesday, Ghazi gave a statement on Tuesday evening.

“Ghazi said that he wasn’t interested to continue with the case and wanted to withdraw his complaint. However, he hasn’t withdraw the complaint,” RM Ajay, a sub-inspector who attended the case, said.

Ghazi also reportedly told police that his friend Rami got treated at a private hospital and was resting in his house. The police have identified the auto driver but are yet to arrest him.
