A 55-year-old Austrian national employed with German airlines Lufthansa was found dead in a five star hotel on MG Road early on Sunday.

Police suspect Alexander Kauric might have committed suicide by slitting his wrist and causing other injuries to himself. The body bore 15 cuts, suspected to be made with a broken glass piece. No suicide note was found.

The hotel employees found him dead in a pool of blood in the bathroom of his room around 12.30 am. The Austrian embassy and Lufthansa have been informed of the incident. The police did not have any further details of the deceased.

Assistant commissioner of police (Ulsoor sub-division) GB Manjunath said Kauric had checked in to The Oberoi early on Saturday, and was to check out at 11.30 pm. His colleagues, who were also staying at the same place, informed the hotel employees after the man failed to turn up. They left for the airport immediately to resume duty.

The employees tried to contact Kauric over the phone before opening the room to find him dead.

Experts from the forensic science laboratory visited the scene and collected evidence to ascertain the cause of death, police said. Initial investigation revealed that he had died of excessive bleeding. It has been suspected that Kauric inflicted injuries on his wrist, legs and head.

Police said the deceased had been with Lufthansa since 1977. However, investigators were yet to ascertain whether he was a pilot or cabin crew. “We don’t know about his family,” a police officer said.

Kauric’s body has been kept in the Bowring Hospital pending instructions from his relatives or the Austrian embassy.
