With crimes committed by transgenders on the rise, city police commissioner Shankar M Bidari on Monday resolved to keep a close eye on the sexual minority and issued instruction to this effect to all police stations.

Bidari said stringent action would be taken against the transgenders who continued criminal activities. Recently, two transgenders attacked a police constable and fled with a gold ring and mobile phone.

Bidari said that such acts by transgenders would not be tolerated. “The police will keep a watch over transgenders from today,” said the police commissioner.

Bidari said the transgenders found guilty of forcing the public to pay money or causing inconvenience to citizens would be booked under IPC, Section 392.

He said the transgenders were found to be demanding money at traffic signals  and various crowded places. “The public should come forward and complain against such incidents. We will definitely take necessary action against them,” he said. “From now onwards all cases in which transgenders demand money, will be registered as robbery,” he said.

The Upparpet police had recently arrested transgenders for their alleged involvement in robbing commuters in the Majestic area. The police said they were attacking lonely people in KSTRC, BMTC and subways in the area. The culprits used to ask for money and if denied, robbed them at knife-point. The police recovered 190 gm of gold jewellery from them.

Akkai Padmashali, a member of the non-governmental organisation, Sangam, said the police should not blame the transgenders taking a few cases into consideration. In many incidents, the police do not carry out proper investigation. Blaming transgenders without proper investigation amounts was against human rights, said Padmashali.
