BJP MP Ananth Kumar and mayor D Venkatesh Murthy led the protest march in city on Monday against the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) order asking the state to release 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu on daily basis till October 15.

BJP MPs, legislators and corporators in Bangalore who participated in the protest took out a protest march from BBMP office, after garlanding the statue of Kempe Gowda, to Cauvery Bhavan and staged a dharna against the Union government.

Addressing the protesters, Ananth Kumar termed the CRA order a death note for Karnataka. “We will not allow this to be implemented. The prime minister as the head of the CRA has committed gross injustice for Karnataka,” he said.

Ananth Kumar urged chief minister Jagadish Shettar to convene a meeting of state MPs and pass a resolution expressing Karnataka’s inability to implement the CRA order. He wanted ministers in UPA government from Karnataka to take the lead in convincing the prime minister to withdraw the CRA order as it was ‘unscientific’. SM Krishna and Veerappa Moily should take aggressive stand in this regard as they were the chief ministers in the past who have wide experience in dealing with the issue, he said.

Karnataka needs 30TMC of water for meeting the drinking water needs of Bangalore and other towns. Farmers of the state need even more to save their crops. Tamil Nadu’s demand cannot be met by sacrificing state’s interests, he added.

BJP MP DB Chandre Gowda urged all the political parties to bury their differences in this fight to force the PM to withdraw his order. He wanted a delegation of BJP corporators led by mayor D Venkatesh Murthy to meet governor HR Bhardwaj on Tuesday and submit a memorandum explaining the effect of CRA order on Bangalore which is depending on Cauvery water for its drinking water purpose.
