The assault on mediapersons has turned the legal fraternity into villains in the eyes of the people. The attack is being seen as a well-planned conspiracy by lawyers to settle scores with journalists for the hard-hitting coverage of lawyers’ protest on January 17 that crippled life in the city for over seven hours.
However, it is not just the lawyers who apparently settled their scores with journalists. There’s a suspicion that vested interests allegedly utilised the occasion to take revenge on mediapersons.
The recent porngate exposed by the electronic media has left many leaders in the BJP thirsting for revenge against the media, especially the electronic media. The delay in issuing orders for police to act tough against the attacking advocates has raised suspicions over the real reasons for the delay.
Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda’s first reactions as the violence broke out further strengthened such suspicions as he said, “the media, too, needs to introspect about the style of its functioning.”
The bickering and factionalism within the BJP is being seen as having played a role behind the vandalism.
JD(S) state president HD Kumaraswamy, pointing to this fact, said: “There seems to be a political conspiracy behind this attack on journalists by forces within the BJP that are vying to grab power. The conspirators have tried to exploit the occasion when Janardhana Reddy was being brought to court for realising their political agenda.”
Bangalore Advocates Association secretary AP Ranganath echoed a similar view.
The presence of huge number of Gali Janardhana Reddy’s supporters as he was brought to the court added to the speculation that Reddy’s supporters exploited the situation to unleash violence to show the Gowda government in the poor light in maintaining law and order.
