With lots of me-too B Schools in the country trying to lure management aspirants, their survival rates have become very slim. For every new B School that opens shop, there are many that shut, mainly due to poor management. This was one of the points made at the inauguration of a one-day teachers’ training programme, organised by the Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS) in the city on Friday.

“There may be plenty of B Schools opening every day, but it’s really the ones that can fill about 50% of their classrooms that can manage. In the last three months, about 150 institutes have applied to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to shut shop,” said Prof Anil Rao Paila, dean, Welingkar Education and one of the members of AIMS.

Faculty ill-equipped
One of the reasons for the poor quality of B Schools is actually the poor quality of its faculty. “The problem is that management schools in our country have teachers who either really good or bad. In some schools, students in 4th semester don’t know the basics of management. So, we decided to start this initiative, where we are training 1,000 teachers of management schools and helping them keep up-to-date with the way the industry works,” said Prof Mohd Masood Ahmed, president, AIMS.

However with training, teachers will be able to be on par with their counterparts in Western countries, he said.

“There are people who take up teaching positions after they themselves have graduated only a year or two ago. Through this training we will try and cultivate them into quality teachers. For teachers to be good mentors for their students, they need mentoring themselves,” he added.

The training programme in the city attracted 120 teachers from various schools. Paila said prof NS Ramaswamy, founder and director of IIM-Bangalore, had addressed the teachers about the new philosophies of management.

Choosing right school
While not everyone can crack the CAT exam to secure a position at prestigious IIMs in the country, there is no dearth in quality education. You just need to carry out proper assessment.

“When you are choosing the right B School, you need to go beyond just looking at brochures. Go and talk to the students in the school and you will get a proper idea of what to expect. Or talk to the teachers. If they are disinterested, then you know they will be the same in the classroom too,” Paila said.
