About 100 needy students from Bangalore will now get a chance to join school and live a decent life, thanks to the initiatives of the All India Movement (AIM) for Seva, a public charitable trust.

After setting up 14 ‘Student Homes’ across Karnataka, AIM has finally acquired land on donation at Hosur and Yelahanka to set up more homes.

“Our national coordinator had reviewed these areas and found many children who require help. Each home will accomodate 50 children. Children will be selected after careful counselling and consultation with the parents, and will be provided all basic amenities, including education,” said Aruna Madnani, coordinator for Bangalore, AIM Seva.

Statistics reveal that less than 30% of the children from rural and needy families complete high school. “Economic pressure forces most children to drop out of school by the age of 12 or 13. Thus, by class VI, the dropout ratio becomes almost 60%. However, at our student homes, the dropout rate is only 12%,” said Aruna.

The organisation is now looking for funds in Bangalore. Another big challenge is to get adequate volunteers.

“Currently, we have seven volunteers in Bangalore. But since all our homes are based in semi-urban areas, getting teachers and volunteers is a challenge. We are looking for a software programme that will help us introduce e-learning in our homes,” said Aruna.

The students in AIM Seva homes are provided education till class X, after which they sit with the counsellors on an individual basis. Sheela Balaji, managing trustee, AIM Seva, said, “We reach out to 82 homes across 15 states in India and have a total strength of 30,000 students. Our education not only impacts their lives, but their families and community, thus having an indirect effect over a million people.”
