AICTE tightens plug on fake universities

In a move that will prevent students from being cheated by fake universities offering diploma courses in management, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to issue an enrolment number for each student joining post-graduate diploma management (PGDM) programmes in AICTE-approved institutions.

This system will instantly reveal whether fake universities are taking students for a ride as all institutes under the AICTE are expected to host information on students enrolled on their respective websites, which are monitored by the council.

There are at least 21 approved PGDM institutes in the south-west region of AICTE, which includes Kerala and Karnataka. Unlike an MBA programme that requires affiliation from any university, PGDM programmes can be run only with AICTE approval (without university affiliation). The enrolment number will help AICTE to track the number of students admitted by each institute by checking whether the names of the students and their enrolment numbers are in the approved lists of the institutes.
