After mockery of a drill, introspection begins in Bangalore

The fire and emergency services department has decided to
review mock drills, following the death of 25-year-old
Nalina due to negligence of the fire and emergency services personnel.   

N Shivakumar, inspector general of police (fire and emergency services), termed the loss of life during the drill at Bombay Rayon Fashions Limited as unfortunate.

He said a safety net was not placed when the woman was being lowered.

“We’re waiting for director general of police AR Infant to come to Bangalore. We will form a committee to investigate the incident and action will be taken on anyone found responsible for this unfortunate incident,” he said.

When brought to Shivakumar’s notice about the rope bought four years ago, he said the issues will be covered by the inquiry committee. He said: “The committee will check the condition of the rope and the date of purchase,” he said.

On the use of ropes during the mock drills, he said that use of ropes was a part of mock drills.

“The ropes are allowed during fire accidents. The firemen use ropes to evacuate people from top floor through windows. The firemen had successfully brought one person from the third floor. The rope snapped when the firemen tried to bring down Nalina,” he said.
