The eighth Fast Track Court (FTC) has awarded three years rigorous imprisonment to four police officers in connection with a custodial death case, which took place in Mahalakshmi Layout police station in 1993 and also slapped Rs13,000 fine to all the four convicts on Friday.

The presiding officer of FTC-8, Mallikarjuna Kinikeri, gave the verdict on Friday, almost 18 years after the incident. The officers who have been convicted are Bettegowda, former police inspector and retired deputy SP; KP Gopal, the then sub-inspector and police inspector in city police commissioner office; and Ravi Kumar and Hanumaiah, who were both police constables then and are now head constables.

The court also ordered the convicts to give Rs50,000 from the fine amount to the victim Nanjunda’s wife, Soubhagya. The other four accused — Lokanath Kadri, Boregowda, Narasimhaiah and Sridhar — have been acquitted because of lack of evidence.Another accused, Maregowda, died in 2002, during the trial period.

COD investigates

The Mahalakshmipura police had taken Nanjunda into custody in 1993 in connection with a theft case. They illegally detained him for more than a month in the police station. During the detention, he was tortured to get a voluntary confession.

Nanjunda then hanged himself using a blanket in the police station. The police took him to nearby private hospital but Nanjunda died there. The police then registered a suicide case against him to hide his illegal detention.

Without handing over the body to his family, the police cremated th body in Srirampuram the same night.Later, Soubhagya came to know about the incident and filed a private complaint in a city court.
The court referred the case to Corps of Detectives (CoD) to investigate the case.

The CoD later filed a chargesheet against the nine police personnel.

Stay order for sentence

However, the accused got a stay order for the sentence from the same court. They requested the court to issue a stay order for the sentence, as most of them were in service. The convicts decided to challenge the verdict in the high court. But they ended up paying the fine amount on Friday.
