Bangalore: A senior police official roughed up TV journalists outside the Koramangala indoor stadium, the venue for the Indian Institute of Planning and Management’s (IIPM) Dare’10 B-school quiz that was being hosted by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
The incident occurred an hour before the 4.45pm-scheduled grand finale of the quiz. No one was injured but upset TV journalists staged a two-hour dharna outside the venue, protesting the assault and demanding an apology from the senior official, who was later identified as HT Ramesh, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Banashankari.
There was a huge crowd outside the venue and Ramesh was manning the crowd. The problem started when Ramesh asked some journalists, who were trying to get in, to display their identity cards. He allegedly used offensive language and threatened to
“take action” against them if his instructions were not followed.
The ACP’s rude behaviour irked some of the TV journalists and a scuffle ensued. The officer roughed up T Raghavan, Pramod Raghavan, Nikhil Kidwai and Jaipal Sharma, belonging to prominent TV news channels. Police commissioner Shankar M Bidari has assured the journalists that he would look into the matter and take action on Tuesday.
