The organisation’s activists created human chains from three different sides of the city — from Anil Kumble Circle, Malleswaram 18th Cross and Ramakrishna Ashram in Basavangudi — to assemble at Freedom Park.
About two lakh students took part in similar protests held by the organisation across 30 districts in the state.
Besides demands that the Union government accepts the Lokpal Bill, the protesting activists demanded that the Lokayukta’s report of illegal mining be accepted and strict action be taken against those found guilty.
Other demands of the protestors included the making of a central law to curb commercialisation of education and health sectors, electoral reforms so that candidates get equal opportunity to campaign and also to make expenditure and funding of political parties more transparent, and freedom to police to act without government interference.
“Students are watching the developments. They know the consequences of continued corruption. Fully understanding this, they are here today, voluntarily to lend their voice to Anna Hazare and to the fight against corruption,” said Santhosh Deva Reddy, organising secretary, Bangalore, ABVP.
“Stopping corruption can help bridge the gap between the rich and poor,” said Chandra Mouli, a student of Shanthi Charitable Trust.
Continuing the protests, the students’ wing of the BJP will organise roadblocks across the country on August 9, demanding the ouster of UPA government at the Centre following widespread allegations of corruption.
